Repair It or Replace It? The Honest Math on a New AC in Miami

Nobody wants to buy a new AC. But sometimes another repair is just renting time on a dying system. Here's the actual decision framework we use — including when we tell people NOT to replace.

The multiplication rule

Take the repair quote and multiply it by the system's age in years. If the answer is over $5,000, replacement deserves a serious look. A $400 repair on an 8-year system (3,200) — repair it. A $900 repair on a 13-year system (11,700) — that money is probably better going toward new equipment.

Age in Miami years

Manufacturers talk about 15–20 year lifespans. That's Ohio math. A South Florida system running nearly year-round in salt air does the same lifetime of work in 10–14 years. If yours is past 12 and needing repairs, each fix is buying less time than you think.

Signs the end is near

What a new system changes

Going from an old 10-SEER-ish system to a modern high-efficiency unit commonly cuts the cooling portion of a Miami power bill by 20–40%. On a $250+ summer bill, that's real money every single month — it partially finances the replacement by itself. Financing spreads the rest; we offer it because August doesn't wait for savings accounts.

When we say "just repair it"

Under 10 years old with a first-time, mid-size failure? Repair. A cheap capacitor or drain fix at any age? Repair. We put this in writing because it's true: we recommend replacement only when the math does. An installer who pushes a new system for every hiccup is selling, not advising.

Thinking about it? Send us the system's age and what it's doing, and we'll tell you over the phone — free — which side of the line you're probably on before anyone visits.
